BABYMONSTER Ahyeon Earns Mixed Reaction For Vocals in Latest Performance

BABYMONSTER member Ahyeon is drawing mixed reactions from Korean netizens for her vocals in a recent performance.

Ever since her appearance on YG Entertainment’s “Last Evaluation,” Ahyeon has earned praise for her unique vocals. Her high notes while performing Charlie Puth’s “Dangerously” and during BABYMONSTER’s debut song “SHEESH” earned idol acclaim from Korean netizens, who praised her voice.

Now, however, the idol is drawing mixed reactions to her vocals.

Following BABYMONSTER’s appearance on “M! Countdown,” a post titled “BABYMONSTER’s Ahyeon screaming during recent performances” was uploaded to Nate Pann on June 19. The post soon went viral, garnering over 100,000 views.

In the post, the original poster states that they are a fan of Ahyeon. Despite that, she is not impressed with Ahyeon’s recent performances, stating she has been screaming her high notes. They added that foreign fans have been continuously pointing this out in the comments of BABYMONSTER performances.

Her screaming stands out more since her vocal tone is different from Ruka’s, who raps in the song.

Korean netizens couldn’t help but agree. Many claim that she tries too hard while performing, which leads her to strain her voice and scream. People hope that she stops trying to over-work her vocals and sings properly since she is a talented vocalist. Others believe that her screaming is too loud and off-putting, leaving many to wonder why she doesn’t perform the same as the recorded version.

However, many came to her defense. They stated that since she is a rookie, it is likely she is trying to hype up the crowd and show off her skills. Others claim that in other performances, she appears to perform better.

Some comments read,

  • “I am a fan of BABYMONSTER, but I agree… But it seems like she has gotten better during the group’s recent fan meeting. I think she will be fine once she fixes it.”
  • “Ahyeon does seem to be doing too much. She tries to be sexy with her facial expressions, but it’s kind of off-putting instead.”
  • “I think since she is a rookie, she is trying to hype up the crowd. Once Ahyeon becomes more experienced, she will adjust her energy and become a great performer.”
  • “Rather than adding riffs at the moment, she is constantly trying to do it. I wish Ahyeon would just since since she is a great vocalist.”
  • “I always thought she was yelling rather than singing.”
  • “It’s seriously too loud. Why can’t Ahyeon just sing the way she recorded?”
  • “It must be hard for bad singers to sing well, but it is easy for good singers to perform naturally. Also, there seems to be a lot of foreign fans who don’t like Ahyeon.”
