Red Velvet's Joy criticizes SM Entertainment, sparking debate among netizens

Red Velvet member Joy has stirred controversy among netizens with her repeated criticisms of her agency, SM Entertainment.

Red Velvet released their new EP album ‘Cosmic’ on June 24 KST, delighting music fans. The album, celebrating the group’s 10th anniversary, showcases Red Velvet’s solid musical prowess and high level of craftsmanship.

Given the significance of the 10th anniversary album, fans’ expectations were high. However, an issue arose when the release of the title track’s music video was delayed. The members, aware of the fans’ anticipation, took it upon themselves to explain the situation and ask for patience. The problem escalated when Joy expressed dissatisfaction after the delayed release of the music video.

In response to a fan’s message on a paid fan communication platform asking her to react to the music video, Joy replied, “Well, they didn’t listen to any of our opinions and just told us to wait. And now we see a music video with no corrections at all.”

She added, “I shouldn’t say more, so I’ll stay quiet,” accompanied by a tearful emoji, drawing attention.

Joy had previously voiced her frustration about SM not promoting Red Velvet’s new release adequately. She expressed her doubts, saying, “I wonder if it’s supposed to be a secret until the end, or if they forgot to announce it, or if they plan to announce it next week.”

These repeated grievances from Joy have led to mixed reactions from netizens. While some understood Joy’s frustration, they criticized her for lacking consideration for SM’s efforts to support the artists. Concerns have been raised that Joy’s public dissatisfaction might only escalate tensions.

Critics argued, “Is she pushing fans to complain for her by expressing her dissatisfaction?” “SM employees work hard, and constant complaints from artists can be demoralizing,” and “How can they cater to every individual opinion?”

On the other hand, some fans sympathized with Joy. They expressed, “She must be really frustrated to say something like this,” “It’s understandable given her love for the album,” and “It must be disheartening for her.”
