ILLIT’s ‘Magnetic’ outperforms NewJeans’ ‘Supernatural’ on Japanese music chart; netizens react

This week on Japan’s Apple Music Chart, the reveal of the top rankings made some waves among K-pop fans. It was discovered that ILLIT’s ‘Magnetic’ had achieved the number 5 spot, while NewJeans’ recent comeback song ‘Supernatural’ was lagging behind at number 13. Their song ‘How Sweet’ also featured on the chart at number 12.

These results were made even more surprising given that ‘Magnetic’ was released almost 4 months ago, yet is still maintaining its spot at the top of the charts. Meanwhile, NewJeans’ ‘Supernatural’ was released only a week ago, and in addition, would be expected to do well on Japan’s Apple Music Chart as a Japanese song.

Given the rivalry between some ILLIT and NewJeans fans in the midst of the HYBE-ADOR conflict, these new chart results sparked discussion among netizens.

“Of course Magnetic is higher, How Sweet is so boring”

“Magnetic is just a really good song”

“Magnetic is so addictive”

“Both songs are very catchy and lighthearted”

“Magnetic is just the style that would be popular in Japan”

“It’s really just better than the NewJeans songs”

“But NewJeans has 10 songs that consistently chart on Apple Music Japan…even their older songs keep showing up on the chart. NewJeans is more successful in real life”

“I like Magnetic too, but it’s weird that whether it’s ILLIT fans or Bang Si Hyuk, somehow everyone seems to feel inferior to NewJeans…”

“I didn’t think much of the results, but when I looked at the comments, suddenly everyone is bringing up different groups and fighting over them…”
