Oh My Girl Seunghee Draws Mixed Reactions After Criticizing Junior Idols' Manners

Oh My Girl member Seunghee has sparked mixed reactions after criticizing junior idols for their lack of manners.

Korean netizens have uncovered a past episode of “Radio Star,” where Oh My Girl member Seunghee appeared as a guest alongside Ok Joo Hyun, Ahn Hyun Mo, and Cho Hyun Ah. During her appearance Seunghee spoke about how idols nowadays have stopped doing one major thing: greeting their seniors.

As she has been in the industry for ten years, Seunghee recalled how there was previously a culture in which idols would go around the waiting room to greet their fellow artists. She revealed that nowadays, that culture has disappeared.

The female idol added that even if junior idols see their seniors or other colleagues in the hallways, they merely greet them with their eyes rather than actually saying hello.

Seunghee expressed her disappointment with this new standard, saying, “I love the old greeting culture. Sometimes I wonder what kind of juniors they are.” When Ok Joo Hyun agreed and expressed sadness over juniors feeling too uptight with them, Kim Gura remarked that the two celebrities are similar.

Korean netizen’s sentiments towards Seunghee’s remarks were mixed. Many agreed with her, saying being good at greetings is the basis of having good manners. They agreed that if you see your colleagues or seniors in the hallway, then junior idols should greet them.

They added that there is nothing hard about greeting another person, and added that greeting properly is not just a thing in idol culture, but work culture in general.

Some, however, criticized Seunghee. They wondered why she would bring up the topic, saying that she looks like a “boomer” while complaining and taking note of juniors who do not greet her. Some Korean netizens believed that she shouldn’t have expressed her opinions on broadcast, as it didn’t do her any good.

Some comments read,

  • “What the heck is ‘eye greeting’? Saying hello is just the basics.”
  • “I like that the greeting culture is gone though. She is probably the only one who enjoyed it. How can people actually like it?”
  • “It’s not only in the idol industry. I feel like nowadays, people don’t greet each other anymore.”
  • “Being good at greeting is the basics of society.”
  • “Why did she bring this up? It’s not like this makes her look good when she talks about it on broadcasts. I get that greetings are important, but the fact that she is checking if her juniors greet her or not makes her look like a junior.”
  • “It’s good that idols don’t go from room to room to greet people. However, greeting with just your eyes is a little much…”
  • “I get that she is trying to bring up the issue but if she talks about this so openly, people will call her a boomer. Why mention this on broadcast?”
  • “Why are people calling her a boomer? If you see someone, shouldn’t you greet them?”
  • “The kids that think ‘eye greeting’ is alright have no societal experience. In our company, even the Executive Vice President nods and greets the junior employees.”
  • “Stop saying it’s because they are introverted and timid. What’s so hard about greeting another person?”
